Magnolia grandiflora"Claudia Wannamaker"
This is a truly outstanding brown-backed selection that blooms profusely from an early age.  We have noticed that trees older than ten years will bloom at every terminal bud.  Other ornamental characteristics include dense form and medium texture.  Claudia develops into a medium broad pyramid.  Leaves persist for two years. Claudia is particularly suited for northern plantings because horizontal branching gives her the ability to withstand snow and ice. Claudia was introduced in 1956 and is more in demand than ever.  In addition to being a fine-looking selection, Claudia also behaves well.  She owes much of her popularity in the industry to the reliability of her performance through the transplant period.

Magnolia grandiflora"DD Blanchard"
Pyramidal habit.  Dark green foliage with orange/brown backing.
Magnolia grandiflora"Hasse"
Very dark green, brown-backed foliage.  It grows in a narrow pyramid, making it ideal for restricted areas.  Hasse has a very small leaf and bloom.  Juvenile foliage is held in an upright position which helps display the brown leaf back.  We have observed that young plants planted next to Little Gem actually have a slower rate of growth.
Magnolia grandiflora"Little Gem"
Profuse bloomer June through November. Leaves and flowers smaller than other grandifloras.  Dark green foliage with a brown back.

Fastest growing of Shady Grove selections.  A fine green-backed magnolia
Magnolia grandiflora"Smith Fogle"
Jade green, copper brown-backed foliage.  Smitty is a robust grower with strong branching, and attains a dense oval form.  The lustrous leaves bear a noticeable textural pattern which adds interest. Many have commented that the leaves bear a resemblance to those of loquat or rubber plant.  The bloom offers a striking citrus-like aroma.
Magnolia grandifloraSouthern Magnolia "Symbol of the South"
Mr. John F. Brailsford, Sr., maintained that "people are entitled to better than seedling Magnolias". Claudia was the first and is still the finest of the cutting-grown cultivars in the trade.
